Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles can elicit sensations after they are inserted, but most report little to no discomfort  Acupuncture needle are so fine and the insertion is so quick,  so pain receptors are rarely even stimulated.  There are some areas of the body that can be more sensitive during insertion such as the hands and feet mostly due to thicker skin.

Acupuncture needles are different than hypodermic needles which are used for shots and drawing blood. Hypodermic needles cut the skin and allow for fluids to be exchanged, acupuncture needles are solid and have a blunt edge which does not cut the skin. Acupuncture needles are also much smaller then hypodermic needles, some as thin as a hair.  About 35 acupuncture needles can fit into the tip of one standard hypodermic needle!
