This month we interviewed our massage therapist here at Rx, Amy Hundley, LMT! Amy shares her journey into massage, lifestyle and wellness philosophies, and easy at-home tips for keeping your body healthy and feeling light!
How has massage helped you in your personal life?
I was still living at with my parents when I started massage school. My education allowed me to help them with their aches, pains and stress from work. I have been able to help my close friends stay pain free and stress free! Learning anatomy and physiology through massage also helped me become more tuned in with my own muscles and learn how to treat myself!
How did you get into massage? Why did you choose to do what you do?
My mom told me that even when I was around 5 years old, I was rubbing her back and shoulders. When I was in high school I was on the color guard team and I would help my teammates out during practices when they had pains. Finally, when I was working at Texas Roadhouse as a server, I would give my coworkers shoulder massages and they loved them so much they offered me a few bucks for a few more minutes. That is when I decided that I should pursue Massage Therapy as a career.
What might someone be surprised to know about you?
I started massage school when I was only 19. I have lived in five states, California, Tennessee, Indiana, Florida, Texas. I smoked cigarettes for five years, due to having been raised around it and having all my friends in my early twenties having the habit. Not having those people in my life made it easy for me to quit.
What is your wellness philosophy?
Your health depends greatly on what you eat. As long as someone eats whole and clean foods they can be healthy. Paying attention to your mental state is key in keeping your body healthy. Being unhappy can create bad habits that reflect in the body.
What piece of advice would you give someone before they book their massage appointment?
For a day or two, take notice of your posture habits, things that you do in your daily life that might be contributing to the aches and pains that you want resolved in the massage. Telling the therapist about these posture habits can help narrow down what needs to be focused on.
What wellness practices do you have in your daily life?
I eat mostly vegetables and lean meats. I start each day with some light stretching to wake my body and mind up. I use essential oils for emotional wellness and body aches.
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
I have a pretty serious sweet tooth. I am always craving fruity, sweet and sour candies. That is why I have to make sure I eat plenty of vegetables and other healthy foods to balance it out!
